Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef preferred for flavor and juiciness
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs helps hold the meatballs together
  • 1 large egg for binding
  • 2 cloves garlic minced for flavor
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil adds herbal aroma
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper for heat
  • 1 roll pizza dough store-bought or homemade, rolled out thin

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Mixing bowls

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, minced garlic, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Mix everything together until well blended, pressing and folding to incorporate the ingredients evenly.
  2. Form the mixture into small, uniform meatballs roughly 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat to prevent sticking.
  3. Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are browned and cooked through. You’ll hear a gentle sizzle as they bake, and they should look juicy and slightly firm to the touch.
  4. While the meatballs are baking, roll out the pizza dough on a floured surface to a thin, even layer. Cut the dough into thin strips, about 1/4 inch wide—these will serve as the mummy bands.
  5. Once the meatballs are cooked and slightly cooled, carefully wrap each one with strips of dough, overlapping slightly as you go to create a bandage effect. Leave a small gap at one end for the ‘mummy head’ area if desired.
  6. Arrange the wrapped meatballs back on the baking sheet. Bake them for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the dough strips turn golden brown and crispy, creating a flaky mummy wrapping.
  7. Remove the mummy meatballs from the oven and allow them to cool slightly. Optional: add tiny dots of mustard or ketchup for 'eyes' to enhance their spooky appearance.

Notes

For extra fun, use small pieces of olives or peppercorns as eyes. Make sure not to overbake to keep the meatballs moist and the dough crispy. These mummies are perfect for Halloween parties or a playful family dinner.
